July snowman’s forced entry /
leaves the kitchen unsettled /
chair legs broken, graffiti on the oven door /
a bird’s nest in the microwave /
the season does not sleep well in a strange room /
turkey vultures landing on its arms /
melting through to a branch of bone /
having to squint all the time as the day lengthens /
snapping at even the most banal phrase of the holiday /
drips of slush on the knife handle
